Before Ferrari conquered the luxury sports car market, the firm built a shining reputation for competition success that was forged around the post-war race circuits of Europe. So, it was fitting that the Scuderia’s record 16th Formula 1 Constructors’ World Championship would be marked by one of the greatest roadgoing supercars of the modern period, and the fastest open Ferrari to ever lap the firm’s Fiorano test track: the Scuderia Spider 16M.

Ferrari clinched its landmark Constructors’ title in 2008, against the backdrop of Lewis Hamilton’s debut victory in the Drivers' Championship, making the victory even more significant. To mark the occasion, the manufacturer unveiled a limited-edition run of 499 Scuderia Spider 16Ms to be built the following year.

The new car was heavily based on the hardcore “Scuderia” version of the firm’s flagship F430 supercar. The exclusively open-topped 16M borrowed the closed car’s scintillating 503-horsepower 4.3-litre V-8 powerplant—further refined with redesigned pistons and a higher compression ratio—and its F1-superFast2 six-speed gearbox.

The 16M featured significant strengthening and stiffening of the F430 monocoque to mitigate for the lack of roof. Incredibly, Ferrari engineers simultaneously reduced the new model’s kerb weight, removing 80 kilograms of mass thanks to a slimming regimen that included lightened front and rear bumpers, forged alloy wheels exclusive to the model, and re-worked front suspension and steering. Even wheel bolts were reproduced in titanium—proof of Ferrari’s unswerving commitment to weight-saving.

Chassis 168305 was delivered new to its first owner via LUEG Sportivo—an official Ferrari dealer in Meerbusch, Germany—in 2009. The car was finished in Rosso Corsa over a Nero interior with matching Nero soft-top, and was specified with a carbon fibre exterior package, carbon fibre sports seats—sized medium—and “Tricolore” racing stripe livery. The cabin, meanwhile, was accented by Giallo instruments. This desirable specification was complemented by an impressive list of standard equipment that included carbon-ceramic disc brakes, and a sonorous free-flow exhaust system.

This car was purchased by the consignor in December 2013 via Maranello Motors of Köln, Germany. The odometer displayed just 1,793 kilometres at time of cataloguing. It is accompanied by a car cover, leather document wallets, operating manual, Hi-Fi warranty card, red key, and warranty card. The car received a fresh MoT certificate and service at marque specialist Foskers on 23 September 2022, at a cost of £3,327.

One of the most engaging and viscerally quick open-topped Ferraris of the modern era, the Scuderia Spider 16M is rightly ranks among Maranello’s modern masterpieces. An opportunity to acquire such a low mileage and well-specified example is not to be missed.
