Sculptor, designer, and painter Stanley Wanlass is known for producing historical monuments with lifelike detail as well as limited-edition automotive paintings and bronze sculptures that tap a deep love for automobiles, which he has collected, restored, and raced since the mid-fifties. His work is on display within the most prestigious museums and private collections around the globe.
This hand-painted bronze titled “S.F. to N.Y.C ’03” depicts the first transcontinental road trip, undertaken by physician and automotive pioneer Dr. Horatio Nelson Jackson and his mechanic Sewall Crocker in a Winton Two-Cylinder Runabout. The harrowing coast-to-coast journey concluded after the pair arrived in New York City on 26 July 1903, 63 days after they set out from San Francisco. To commemorate their historical feat, Wanless produced 63 examples of the sculpture, which was originally commissioned in 1994. Number 22, offered here, was purchased directly from the artist in 2016 and is mounted on a hand branded leather base with a bronze band etched by Wanless.
