Forbes Silver Co. Quadruple
1908
4 × 2.5 inches
Produced by the Forbes Silver Co. and distributed by Locomobile in 1909, these rare trophies were made of quadruple-plated silver over a pewter cup, with “Forbes Silver Co. quadruple 1048” marked on the base. They were originally created as a gift for a Locomobile Victory banquet held at the Stratfield Hotel in Bridgeport, Connecticut on 9 November 1908, celebrating the officers of the Locomobile Company and the crew of the first American car to win the Vanderbilt Cup Race. The guest list included the winning driver George Robertson and mechanic Glenn Ethridge, Locomobile officers, Bridgeport business owners, members of the automobile trade press, and Vanderbilt Cup Race officers. Tickets to the event were sold to the general public for $5, the equivalent of around $100 today. Shortly thereafter, the company decided to create a retail version of the Vanderbilt Cup commemorating Locomobiles' victory in 1908. Two versions were made. It came available with or without the radiator cap.
