In an effort to better compete against arch-rival Chrysler’s Hemi V-8 engines in NASCAR competition, Ford looked to its Mustang in the late 1960s. Up until then, the Mustang had been more of a showboat than a true performance car, but Ford’s new 429 cubic inch engine mated to a four-barrel Holley carburetor transformed the original pony car forever. To make the most of the more than 500 horsepower the 429 put out (despite its conservative 375-hp rating), Ford fitted it with a thicker rear sway bar while the automaker contracted Kar Kraft to significantly modify its engine bay to accept the beefy V-8.

Through Kar Kraft, Ford built well over the 500 needed for homologation purposes; demand was sufficient for the Dearborn automaker to assemble 859 Boss 429s in 1969 in a choice of five exterior colors. This Boss 429 is Kar Kraft number KK1885 and is 1 of 122 built in Royal Maroon. This 1969 example was recently treated to a full rotisserie restoration. Since being brought back to as-new condition, it has only been trailered to events.

It is fitted with a model-correct 429-cid V-8 and a nine-inch Traction-Lok rear axle. Found decades ago in Tennessee not far from where it was originally sold, it was given a new lease on life before being saved by a Ford Mustang collector. Its original sales invoice and window sticker are included along with an Elite Marti Report, which paint a picture of a late production Boss 429 and it now includes period-correct louvers over its rear windshield.

With all of the challenging restoration work complete, all this Mustang Monthly featured Boss 429 needs is a proud new owner ready to show it and enjoy it.
