The R107-chassis Mercedes SL has become an icon. Nicknamed the “Panzerwagen,” the R107 survived not only the U.S. emissions and bumper regulations but also rollover legislation that threatened to outlaw convertibles entirely. For a good portion of its 19-year production run, the R107 was one of the only roadsters available for purchase in the U.S. It’s no wonder, then, that this elegant sports car has been, and remains, an Icon for Mercedes-Benz.

In 1981 the SL received a new, modern V-8 engine and was renamed 380SL , but U.S. buyers were left to dream of the hot-rod European 500SL models. Or import one themselves. In response to these “grey-market” private imports, Mercedes revealed the ultimate R107, the now legendary U.S.-market 560SL, on sale here for the final four years of production. Unavailable in its native German market, this 5.6-liter V-8 brute was the largest-displacement Mercedes engine of its day and transformed the SL into the sporting roadster its looks had always promised.

As one of those last R107s, this 560SL benefits from nearly two decades of continual improvements to the SL lineup. It is presented in pristine, original condition, finished in the rare Grey Pearl metallic over palomino leather. This correct 560SL is offered for sale with its factory removable hardtop, and original books, records, and keys.
