The Camaro line added a new Type LT (Luxury Touring) model to broaden its market appeal as buyers were looking for more luxurious features to go along with their penchant for performance. The new model also countered its competitor, the Ford Mustang Grande. Buyers liked what they saw as 32,327 were sold of a total Camaro production of 96,751 units.
Of those, the number is surely substantially smaller for cars outfitted like the Medium Red example being offered. The newest Camaro for 1973 was the LT, and it was built for those who like their luxury and sports car type handling all in the same car, similar in theory to the finest European touring cars of the period. The Type LT came standard with the Turbo-Fire 350-cid two-barrel carburetor V-8 engine; this particular unit is paired to a console-mounted automatic transmission. Also from the LT package is a driver’s side remote sports mirror with a manually operated twin on the passenger’s side. LT badging is seen on the front, roof rear quarter and rear end panel. Rally wheels were standard, but this example has the special and optional Z28 factory wheels with BFGoodrich Radial T/A tires mounted. With white stripes, plus front and rear spoilers, the LT looks like something special.
This one is very special inside too, as it features the rather uncommon black and white houndstooth interior on the front bucket seats and rear bench. The LT was equipped with the new Interior Décor/Quiet Sound Group that was used to make the car much quieter on the road. Door panels and the dash were presented with woodgrain vinyl accents, an LT emblem on the steering wheel; special instrumentation includes a tachometer, ammeter, electric clock and AM/FM radio. This special machine also has desirable factory air conditioning to further emphasize the 1970s luxury aspect to this car. It is reported that this Type LT is “all original with the exception of one repaint in factory color two years ago,” a wonderful testament to its overall significance in this era of Camaro. Reported to be show quality, this LT was originally a rust-free, garage find example that would be a wonderful driver to add to your stable.
