The Limited Edition Shelby GLHS was promoted as having the type of performance that would flat-out beat many much pricier imports in period – at an advertised three-to-four times less than their competitors. The great man, Carroll Shelby himself was quoted as calling the GLHS as “affordable fun for serious drivers.” And with each of the 500 produced being specially designed and built; the feeling was exhilarating knowing that you possessed something special.

True performance in a road car has always been (at most times) pricey; Dodge took this perception and tried to lay it to rest with the introduction of this select Shelby GLHS. Powering the GLHS is an incredibly efficient 2.2-liter turbocharged multi-point fuel injected engine that produced 175 horsepower; this unit is paired to a five-speed manual transmission. Delivering the power to the ground was secured by Shelby-specified stiffer front anti-sway bars and fully-adjustable Koni “iso-struts” with coil springs that can be manually set up for different driving conditions. At the rear end, you will find a semi-independent trailing arm suspension system. The effect of this end-to-end balance was to be rewarded with near neutral handling characteristics that delivered a reported .88-g’s on the skid pad. These elements, combined with power steering and power front disc brakes as standards, not only help control this smart package in the manner one may expect from a European road car.

Other model-specific features include Shelby Centurion cast aluminum wheels, a specially designed front air dam and quartz halogen headlamps. Other practicalities consist of air conditioning, AM/FM digital stereo radio, rear window defroster, leather-wrapped steering wheel, leather shift knob, Shelby signature plate and individual production number mounted to the dash. A Rallye instrument cluster, front console, high-back bucket seats, blacked-out moldings, intermittent wipers, “heel and toe” accelerator pedal, tinted glass, special black paint and graphics, intercooler and more were also part of the package. This car is reported as “all original, except for the tires.” It has been sparingly used. The GLH designation on the performance-based Shelby was seen in period as an acronym for “goes like hell.”
