The Olds 4-4-2 began life in 1964 as an option on the mid-size F-85 with a $285.14 “Police Apprehender Pursuit Package,” in effect, Lansing’s answer to the Pontiac GTO. 4-4-2 stood for four-barrel carburetion, four-on-the-floor and dual exhausts. Much like the Buick GS, this was a more luxurious musclecar, but no less one serious performer. Beginning in 1970, 4-4-2’s received a standard big-block 455-cid V-8 and optional W-30 package which featured cold-air induction, long-duration cam, aluminum intake manifold, and low-restriction air cleaner giving the car 300-hp for 1972. This particular car features W-30 badging without all of these aforementioned requisites, but according to decoders, the fifth character VIN “V” designation shows that this is an original 455-cid, 270 horsepower car. The W-30 carried an “X” this model year according to numerous sources. The car does feature the twin-intake style of hood with pin-lock fasteners as seen on the W-30.
This Flame Orange with white trim and black interior example is a Canadian car that is equipped with the highly desirable four-speed manual transmission; power steering and brakes, bucket seats, center console, factory Super Stock wheels, white vinyl roof, dual sport-type mirrors, AM radio with rear seat speaker, rear window defogger, specially painted hood and the Rocket Rallye Pac. The 4-4-2 package included such things as FE2 suspension with heavy-duty front and rear stabilizer bars, hood and body stripes, special grille and identification markings.
