The Fiat 500 was an enormously practical and popular vehicle throughout Europe, and this US-spec Sports version is known as a quite rare car. The Sport was offered over a three year period, and it has a revised final drive ratio and a higher performance, rear-mounted engine that is bored, ported and polished with larger valves, domed pistons; special cam and carburetor. This results in a 499.5-cc inline two-cylinder engine that produces an approximate and respectable 20 horsepower and is mated to a manual transmission with floor-shift.
The Fiat is freshly restored, being finished in late 2013, to a condition executed in a manner consistent as possible to factory original equipment. The US-spec cars have seven-inch sealed-beam headlights and larger bumpers with bumper guards. This particular car also is equipped with the optional and rare boosted heater.
The fashionable Sport version of the “Nuova” features a distinctive red stripe that extends from nose-to-tail on both sides and nicely complements the white exterior and red, black and white interior. Rear hinged, “suicide” doors contribute to the sporty nature of the Fiat, as does the fabric roof.
The 500 Sport is a very popular and crowd-pleasing car; this particular car has received first place trophies for Fiat-based classes, including the Euro Auto Festival held in October 2013.
Though this model was further tuned by companies such as Abarth and Giannini, the Sport was the most powerful 500 produced by the Fiat factory. This model of car won the Hockenheim 12 hour endurance race for cars under 600-cc and also captured second, third and fourth for a dominate showing.
