Jaguar boasted its 1990 XJ V12 was ‘the ultimate in British luxury’, a claim hard to dispute. The ‘classic’ Series III launched in 1983 featuring a trip computer, top-grade audio equipment and ‘pepperpot’ alloy wheels with Pirelli tyres. Only two discreet badges distinguished it from the XJ6.
After the XJ40 launch in 1986, the Jaguar XJ V12 effectively became a special-order car, finished by hand. It found a following among traditional buyers, assuring its classic status. The only options were the choice of audio equipment, fog lamps or a sunroof.
For many marque enthusiasts, the 1990 model year is the end of the ‘true’ Jaguar era with Ford ownership. That year saw just 1,746 Series III V12s made and the majority were Daimler leading to the Jaguar version being discontinued. At its time, this was one of the most luxurious British automobiles money could buy.
