The BMW i8 was unveiled at the 2013 Frankfurt Motor Show following years of development through various concept cars. Styling was impressive, barrowing from the BMW M1 Homage concept car from April 2008. Intended as a flagship sports car debuting hybrid technology for BMW, it launched under the company’s i sub-brand. The hybrid powertrain was made up of a transverse mid-mounted 1.5-liter turbocharged three-cylinder gasoline engine backed by a six-speed automatic transmission driving the rear wheels and a 98-kW electric motor paired with a GKN two-speed automatic transmission driving the front wheels. The two powertrains’ combined output was an impressive 357 horsepower and 420 pound-feet of torque, capable of achieving 0-60 mph in just 3.8 seconds and an electronically governed top speed of 155 mph.

The car is operable in three distinct drive modes. In electric mode the car is capable of driving 22 miles solely on the battery. In comfort mode the gas and electric engines work in tandem providing a comfortable ride while maximizing fuel economy. In sport mode the gas and electric engines again work in tandem, now providing maximum power output while also being capable of charging the batteries. While initially only available as a coupe, a roadster followed in 2018. Production of the i8 came to an end following 2020 model year.
