This 1964 Triumph 650 has lived quite a life. Referred to as “Smoke This,” it was once owned by Doug Hewitt, a well-known gentleman within the California motorcycle scene. Hewitt went to high school with Bud Edkins, and later became good friends with Von Dutch. Hewitt bought the bike and reportedly ran it for 30 years with no rebuilds, fueling the motorcycle strictly with avgas. It’s rumored the gas tank was painted by Von Dutch. When Doug Hewitt passed away, Vinnie took ownership of this unique California motorcycle. Vinnie raced this “desert sled” at Day in the Dirt which is an event put on by the Stuntman’s Association. In addition to enjoying the bike himself, Vinnie put the bike on loan at the Petersen Museum for their exhibit titled, “Braving Baja.” The motorcycle is powered by a 650-cc two-cylinder engine which is paired to a manual transmission. This is a unique example of a period California “desert sled,” and one that has been tied to influential names within the California motorcycle community.
