Oil on canvas, 1968. Signed and dated lower right corner, framed. 54 1/4 x 43 inches. In the late 1960s through counterculture underground publications, the American art scene was changing. In 1967, the First Annual Monterey Pop Festival took place in Monterey, California. The event provided three days of a unique blend of sights, sounds and experiences. After observing the incredible success of the event Williams set out with the desire to paint a blockbuster piece that would win the hearts of the rapidly growing youth based underground art world and challenge the thought of the current reign of abstract expressionism. Williams planned to exhibit the finished painting at the Second Annual Monterey Pop Festival. The result was, In the Land of Retinal Delights, a psychedelic masterpiece and arguably one of Williams most prolific pieces. The painting depicts a man in a brown suit seated upon what appears to be a giant mountain of shapes and knick-knacks. Often dubbed the Eyeball Painting the suited figure features an extremely large right eye. The amount of detail in the painting is remarkable as the mountain of knick-knacks is flawlessly reflected in the figures eye. Seemingly two paintings in one, the viewer is drawn in by the mountains of detailed shapes and then chased away by a tremendously large eye staring back. Oil painting has always been the most important medium of Williams. Through multi layers of transparent colors and varnishes Williams is able to build a color intensity that is very reflective of the Psychedelic Era. Custom painters use this same technique of spraying many layers of paint on hot rods, customs or motorcycles. In the Land of Retinal Delights is a splendor of color and detail. The piece expertly captures the turmoil and change of the times through the mountains of discarded shapes and objects. Unfortunately, the Second Annual Monterey Pop Festival never took place. After In the Land of Retinal Delights completion the painting made its way to the MovieWorld Museum. When MovieWorld opened its doors in 1970 it was a constantly evolving work in progress. One particular project that Jimmy Brucker and Ed Big Daddy Roth frequently discussed was an art gallery in the main lobby of the museum to display the art that had come out of Roth Studios. With this in mind Roth recommended Williams brilliant painting, which resided at MovieWorld until its closure in the late 1970s. It was always well received by the public with the most frequently comment being that it made visitors nervous, almost following the viewer around the room with its eye. Without question, In the Land of Retinal Delights is visually entrancing as it shows the viewer a plethora of colors, images and sub scenes; at the same time, reflecting Williams ability to combine all of these qualities into a magnificent painting, which is widely considered one of his most significant works. Exhibition History: MovieWorld, Buena Park ,CA (Permanent Collection); Featured in the movie Watch Out for the Bummer, 1971.
