1,493-cc, 53-hp horizontally-opposed OHV four-cylinder engine, four-speed manual transmission, four-wheel independent torsion bar suspension and four-wheel hydraulic drum brakes. Wheelbase: 94.5-inches.

This innocuous-looking Volkswagen Cabriolet belies its shabby appearance. Far from being a candidate for the scrap heap, it is in fact a movie star. Not of the iconic stature of Herbie the Love Bug, obviously, but its screen credits are just as genuine.

The car appears in the 1978 comedy “Up in Smoke,” starring Cheech Marin and Tommy Chong – Cheech and Chong. In that role it wore a Rolls-Royce radiator, inelegantly bolted to the front. The radiator has been lost, but the car is unmistakably the clapped-out VW that is mistreated in several scenes.

It has lots of dents and scratches, and the top is a mess, but the interior is essentially intact, though worn. It has the correct VW Sapphire V radio, Dunlop steel radial tires and the coveted California black plate UQE 765.
