217.8-cid, 97-hp Flathead six-cylinder engine, single-barrel Carter carburetor, three-speed manual transmission, independent coil spring front and rear semi-elliptic leaf-spring suspension, four-wheel drum brakes. Wheelbase: 118.5-inches

The 1949 model was the first new design from Plymouth since 1942. Company ad men referred to it as “The Great New Plymouth” and it featured not only a fresh body design, but some innovative features as well. For example, instead of a floor-mounted starter button, the ignition was on the dash and fired up with the turn of a key.

For the first time the Woodie station wagons came with an all-steel roof and a steel tailgate, though the rest of the wagon part of the body was made from ash, mahogany and maple by U.S. Body and Forging Company. The Special Deluxe Woodie wagon was the top of the line; the most expensive car in the Plymouth showroom.

They were the most unique, too, with bumpers, taillights and much of the trim exclusive to the model. The tailgate featured a Continental-style spare tire enclosure, necessitating a special ‘dip’ in the bumper so it could be lowered.

This Plymouth Special Deluxe Woodie Wagon we have the delight of offering is described as a virtual time warp example, even retaining its quite rare and desirable period window stickers from the 1950s and ‘60s. Additionally, the dashboard has been signed by Jan and Dean, Frankie Avalon and Mike Love of the Beach Boys. It appears to have been very well maintained and is reported to be a great driver, as both the engine and transmission were both recently rebuilt. It is well-appointed throughout with the optional roof-rack and customary surfboard, as well as a factory Plymouth radio. It has been recently serviced in preparation for the auction and is being offered on behalf of its Southern California owners, and it is ready to hit the beaches and car shows.
