Long believed to have been modeled on English actress Eleanor Velasco Thornton, the 'Spirit of Ecstasy'—also known as 'Flying Lady' or 'Silver Lady'—was created by sculptor Charles Skyes in 1911 to serve as a radiator mascot for Rolls-Royce automobiles.
Several large-scale editions of the sculpture were subsequently commissioned for display in Rolls-Royce dealerships, and Skyes is also said to have produced castings of his own. Further editions have been made over the years for the collector market.
Measuring 28.5 in. tall with base (base is 15.25 in. diameter), this detailed bronze statue bears the signature of Charles Sykes and is numbered 32. It is also inscribed with the maker's mark of "Del Zornada." Set upon a stone and metal plinth for display, this sculpture would be a delightful addition to a stable of fine Rolls-Royces.
