This Alfredo De la María painting depicts Camille Jenatzy racing to claim his 1st place trophy at the 1903 Gordon Bennett Cup in his Mercedes 85 HP race car. The Gordon Bennett Cup was an annual European auto race held from 1900 to 1905, and it was hosted by James Gordon Bennett Jr., sportsman and publisher of the New York Herald. For 1903, the Gordon Bennett Cup was held on the streets around Athy, Ireland. National teams competed against each other, and each chose its own identifying color, marking the beginning of national automotive racing colors. For 1903, the British team chose to paint their cars Shamrock Green, which later became known as British Racing Green.
