In the face of difficult economic conditions that saw many American luxury manufacturers turning to lower-cost models to shore up their bottom line, Packard remained committed to serving its traditional clients with a line of flagship models that were as spectacular as ever. In 1932 Packard responded to Cadillac’s opening salvo in the multi-cylinder war with the revival of their famous Twin Six model. With a powerful and silken L-head V-12 and sophisticated chassis, the 1932 Twin Six was one of the finest production cars available, catering to an elite clientele. Just 549 buyers opted for the Twin Six option, and today, just as when new, the Twin Six stands among the most desirable automobiles of the Classic Era, prized for its exquisite style and exceptional performance.
This 1932 Series 905 Twin Six is a beautifully restored example, recently out of forty years of continuous ownership by a noted collector and enthusiast. When he acquired this car, it wore original five-passenger sedan coachwork. Concurrently, the owner also had an original, unrestored 903 coupe roadster. As part of the restoration, he removed the respective bodies from the firewall back and exchanged them between the two chassis, with the Super Eight coupe roadster body aligning perfectly with the highly original Twin Six chassis. The result is an all-Packard-made Twin Six coupe roadster, widely regarded as the holy grail of the early twelve-cylinder cars. It is believed that this same method was employed by Packard dealers of the period in order to meet the demands of their clients.
A well-documented restoration followed, executed to a high standard with input from numerous marque experts around the country. In 2008 the Classic Car Club of America granted this car Full Classic status, and it has been used sparingly since. It presents today in wonderful condition, finished in a striking dark brown livery with complementing brown leather interior and canvas top.
The mechanical spec includes the 445.5-cubic-inch L-head V-12 mated to a three-speed manual gearbox. With 160 horsepower, the Packard engine delivered outstanding performance and unrivaled refinement. The 142-inch-wheelbase chassis features adjustable ride control and powerful, vacuum-assisted Bendix brakes. The accompanying history file includes photographs documenting the restoration and fitment of the coachwork, as well as historical correspondence and period service information. The sale of this car represents a rare opportunity to acquire an elegant Packard Twin Six with highly desirable bodywork, restored to a high standard and marvelously suited for touring or concours duty.
