Packard celebrated 1939 with its Seventeenth Series. They offered in their Super Eight brochure the phrase, “For you who want a super car.” Yes, even in 1939, the term is associated with fine automobiles. For the days of ever-crowding streets, it was to give the proud owner nimbleness and ease of handling, combined with power and luxury that only a big car could offer. It gives you the smartness of famous and ageless Packard lines, with a distinctive beauty all its own.

A mild update on the previous year, new features included a column-mounted shifter, revised hood louvers and new taillights. The hill-holding device, tachometer and overdrive are a few of the many options that were offered. The inline engines were also improved with a cast iron cylinder head, which increased the compression ratio and helped make an extra 10 horsepower. For this model year, it is reported only 3,962 Packards were manufactured.

This 1939 Packard is a beautiful example presented in black paint with a retractable black convertible top highlighted with red piping. Furthermore, the exterior has excellent chrome work, wide whitewall tires, dual side-mounted spare tires, pedestal mirrors, driving lights, and a large pelican hood ornament. The inline eight-cylinder engine is fueled by a downdraft carburetor and connected to a three-speed synchromesh manual transmission with overdrive. The stunning interior on this motorcar features red upholstery and door panels; along with a woodgrain dashboard and a three-spoke steering wheel.

In 1997, this Packard received a frame-off restoration that still presents nicely. In 2013 the car was thoroughly reconditioned, along with a complete mechanical servicing in 2014 ensuring the drivability and reliability of this fine motorcar.
