The Clean Machine. The Supercar. The Magnificent Brute. These were but a few of the superlatives used by automotive experts of the period to describe the 1970 Dodge Charger R/T. By any measure, it was considered an exceptional and special kind of personal car. And that was with the standard 440-cid Magnum V-8 four-barrel carb powerplant. This outstanding example ups the ante with its reported correct 440-cid, 390 horsepower unit with three two-barrel carburetors.

Dodge first introduced the Charger as a mid-year addition to its 1966 lineup. It shared much of its sheetmetal and underpinnings with the Coronet. In 1968, the Charger was restyled creating quite the sensation on the showroom floor for its combination of good looks, outstanding performance and great value. 1970 marked the third and final year for this bodystyle on Dodge’s intermediate Charger of which the division produced 10,337 R/T’s. R/T simply meant Road/Track which also meant business to Dodge’s competitors. The 1970 received non-functional scoops bolted on to each door to highlight the sporty theme.

This Plum Crazy with Charcoal and black vinyl bucket seat interior example is stated to be one of the most prime examples with its original fender tag that confirms a lengthy list of options. The car has never been dismantled and has experienced only one repaint in the course of its existence. The mechanical components are reported as correct to the car, and the owner conveys that it is “hard to find one so original.” It wears all of its original sheetmetal and is rust-free with original factory undercoating.

Among the equipment found onboard this Six-Pack Charger R/T is a four-speed manual transmission, Trac-pak 3.54:1 Dana 60 that was optional on 440 and mandatory on 426 powered cars with four-speed manual transmission. Included with the 3.54 gears with Sure Grip in a Dana 9.75 inch axle; were a seven blade fan, max cool (26-inch) radiator and a dual point distributor. Additional features consist of a “Tic-toc-tach,” center armrest/buddy seat, three-speed wipers, hood pins, drip rail moldings, body belt moldings, hood-mounted turn signals, upper door frame paint in black, AM/8-track radio/tape player, performance hood paint, black longitudinal tape stripe and light package.

The Charger R/T 440 Six-Pack is a study in aggressiveness that is not recommended for timid souls. It rides rock-steady R/T Rallye Suspension, and is reined in by over-sized heavy –duty drum brakes. A fantastic experience awaits those who want to strap in and gain familiarity with its power, ride, feel, response and control.
