By 1968 the Impala Super Sport had been reduced back to being simply an Impala model option (RPO Z-03) as opposed to being a separate model with its own VIN designation. Accordingly, the SS 427 (RPO Z-24) was also just another model option for the standard Impala. Unlike 1967, when the Z-24 option was basically combined with an Impala Super Sport to make the SS 427, in 1968 the SS 427 was a stand-alone option that could be had on the Sport Coupe, Convertible, and the new-for-1968 Custom Coupe. With sales of the 1968 SS 427 being very poor, Chevrolet executives finally seemed to accept the writing that had been on their walls since 1966. At the end of the 1968 model year the standard Impala Super Sport was removed from a buyer's possible options, leaving only the SS 427 to carry on the full-sized Chevrolet Super Sport lineage for 1969. The end was clearly in site for the Impala SS.

Just like the 1967 SS 427, the 1968 Impala SS 427 did not include the name "Impala" anywhere on the body. It was very distinguishable from a standard Impala or Impala Super Sport in several ways. The most identifying features of the SS 427 were its special louvered fenders and sports-styled hood with a chrome insert near the base of the windshield. Both of these features were SS 427 only. Due to its low production numbers, the 1968 Impala SS 427 is without a doubt one of the rarest Chevrolet Super Sports of all time. Of the three year run of the Impala SS 427, it was the least produced. However, thanks to several cosmetic differences between it and a standard Impala, 1968 is also quite probably the hardest of the three years to fake or clone.

The pristine example shown here is optioned with the L-36 Turbo-Jet 427 V-8 rated at 385 horsepower and a Turbo 400 automatic transmission and HD suspension. It is one of only 1,778 cars that rolled off the assembly line in 1968 with the SS 427 equipped (RPO) Z-24. Under the hood finds such features as power brakes and power steering with every component fully restored and detailed to as-new condition. The interior has also been fully restored and is equipped with bucket seats, console, power windows, remote exterior mirror, and AM/FM radio with auxiliary 8-track player. Following the concours restoration, the odometer was set back to zero and currently reads less than seven miles. It is finished in the factory correct Island Teal with matching two tone upholstery. This is a magnificent and rare show piece that is very seldom found.
