The Ford Mustang from 1964-1/2 through 1973 experienced more of an evolution rather than a revolution in design. The car, some would say, was the start of the so-called “Pony Car” segment with its introduction as a mid-year model in 1964. Lee Iacocca, George Payne, and the rest of the Mustang design crew created an instant success. Ford often, and wisely, retooled this popular model based on buyer demands, including larger displacement engines, option packages, trim enhancements, and other cost-manageable refinements that added to the allure.

For 1973, Mustang production was brisk with 134,867 leaving the factories. Body styles and major packages included a coupe, fastback, Grande, Mach 1 and a convertible. Only 11,853 of the convertibles were delivered, as seen on this Code 6E Medium Bright Yellow offering. It is a particularly well equipped example with a 351-cid V-8, four-barrel carburetor and a four-speed transmission with Hurst Shifter option. Other noted factory options include power steering, console, and competition suspension. The Mach 1-style hood with hood pins and the uncommonly seen factory forged aluminum slotted wheels shod in Firestone Wide Oval tires give the car a proper vintage muscle appearance. It was delivered new to Legg Ford Sales of Virginia and today remains sharp and crisp with a well-detailed engine compartment and components. With the Ford Mustang celebrating 50 years of production in 2014, this convertible is sure to be a popular attraction.
