The first uni-bodied Hudson was introduced in 1948 and became one of the great, post-war designs of all time. They were sleek and had a low center of gravity which allowed them to handle extremely well. The dropped floor pan earned them the name “step down” as it was one of the few American cars where its occupants actually stepped down into the car. Hudson was also one of the first automakers to advertise on television. The new model was only 60-inches high and its center of gravity correspondingly very low. The basic shape of the step-down Hudson persisted for six years, until 1954, when the company merged with Nash to form American Motors.

For 1950, Hudson’s luxury model was the Custom Commodore Eight. Three models were offered - a four door sedan, a two door coupe and the two door convertible brougham. The convertible brougham was the most expensive Hudson for 1950 and also the lower production model making it extremely rare and sought after by today’s collectors. The price tag for this exceptional model of car was $2,893 when it was offered new.

This example is a well-executed and highly accurate restoration finished in the period correct colors of Cornish Cream with a complementing maroon interior and a tan convertible top. The interior is accented by a wood grain dashboard and matching door trim. This Commodore 8 Convertible Brougham features the renowned and original 254-cid, 128-hp straight eight-cylinder Super-Eight engine and is backed by a three-speed column-shift manual-shift transmission. Like the rest of the vehicle, the engine compartment is extremely well detailed. This Commodore convertible is a well-equipped example with an overdrive transmission, radio, clock, power windows, hydraulically activated convertible top, fender skirts, full wheel covers and front and rear bumper guards. The spare in the trunk matches those on the car. This is an outstanding presentation of an extremely rare and desirable Hudson.
