316.6-cid, 227-hp OHV V-8 engine, four-speed Hydra-Matic transmission, coil spring independent front suspension, live rear axle with semi-elliptic leaf springs, and four-wheel power drum brakes. Wheelbase: 124-inches

Minor trim updates aside, the real news at Pontiac for 1956 was under the skin. The engine was enlarged to 316.6-cid, and the four-barrel Star Chief version made 227-hp with automatic transmission. Strato-Flight Hydra-Matic improved on the earlier “Hydro,” and there were better seating positions, updates to the suspension, improved seals and valve guides, fuel tank redesign and other changes that were felt more than seen.

This California-built Star Chief convertible is striking in red and white. Equipped with power steering, power brakes, Wonderbar radio, heater, clock and fender skirts, it has received a professional restoration. Additional accessories include door handle guards, a day-night mirror and Contintental kit. Contours are excellent, and the paint exhibits a deep shine. The brightwork is very good, with very little aging of the stainless items. The interior is red-and-white pleated vinyl, all in good condition, and harmonizes with the white vinyl top and matching boot.

The engine compartment is clean, while underneath, the car has a black textured finish. B.F. Goodrich Silvertown whitewalls nicely compliment the faux wire wheel covers. Ideal for summer touring and parades, it comes with an original owner’s guide and some period advertisements.
