409-cid, 400-hp OHV V-8 engine, four-speed manual transmission, coil spring independent front suspension, live rear axle with trailing arm coil spring suspension, and four-wheel power hydraulic drum brakes. Wheelbase: 119-inches

Not all Chevy 409s were created equal. In 1964, there were three stages of tune, a 340-hp version with hydraulic valve lifters, a solid lifter 400-hp variant with single Carter AFB four-barrel carb, and a 425-hp dual quad unit, also with solid lifters. This car has the “intermediate” 400-hp, single quad engine.

Initially an option package, for 1964 Super Sport became a series in itself, comprising a hardtop Sport Coupe and Convertible Coupe. Both were available with any engine, but few were ordered with any of the lesser V-8s, let alone a six. Upgrades from regular Impala equipment included front bucket seats with locking console, leather-grained vinyl, swirl-pattern instrument panel inserts and moldings, built-in rear speaker, dual dome and courtesy lights, door safety reflectors, special body side moldings and SS emblems both inside and out. The rear cove outline moldings had silver-anodized inserts and Super Sport wheel covers were fitted. Of the 8,684 409-cid engines produced for 1964, the majority were installed in Super Sport cars.

In addition to the 400-hp 409, this 1964 Impala SS Convertible Coupe has the four-speed manual transmission, power steering, power brakes, pushbutton radio with dual rear antennas, heater, windshield washers and dual bowtie-logo outside mirrors. Unlike earlier 409 Super Sports, the tachometer is integrated into the instrument panel.

The recipient of a nut-and-bolt restoration, it has excellent black paint, unblemished contours and a striking red interior. The black vinyl convertible top is fitted with an interior-matching red boot. The engine compartment gleams with chrome valve covers and air cleaner, and the 409 block and heads are the correct red. Detailing is excellent, from the hoses and clamps to the inspection marks on the firewall. Underneath the frame is painted matte black, while the floor pan is painted red oxide. B.F. Goodrich Silvertown narrow whitewalls surround the distinctive SS wheel covers.

It’s hard to imagine a more perfect ’64 Super Sport. This car is bound to please.
