From its first appearance as a Corvette at GM’s 1954 Waldorf Astoria Motorama, Chevrolet’s dramatic Nomad station wagon was a big hit. Introduced to the regular passenger line in 1955, its influence extended far beyond the modest total of 8,386 units built that year. This remained true over the car’s three-year lifespan, even though production actually diminished slightly year by year.

Stylistically, the 1956 Nomad has the most individuality, as the side trim has a forward slant matching the slope of the door windows. This distinguishes it from the rest of the ’56 line, which has a reverse angle at that location. The 1955 Nomad has only minimal side trim, the ’57’s is identical to that year’s Bel Air.

Painted in a brilliant shade of copper metallic, with white rear quarters and side spear, this Nomad has excellent contours and paint, as well as superb brightwork. The interior is done in matching fabrics to the original pattern, with brown carpet on the floors and on the cargo area. The original steering wheel has been fitted to a tilt column, and the car has power steering, power brakes, aftermarket air conditioning and an AM/FM/cassette stereo is fitted in the original location.

The engine compartment houses a 350-cid small-block engine, coupled to a three-speed Hydra-Matic. It is very clean, and brightened by aluminum valve covers, polished alternator and air conditioning compressor, and chromed covers on the exhaust manifolds.

The undercarriage is exceptionally clean and well detailed, but without chrome or stainless components. The tires are 17-inch B.F. Goodrich Radial T/A blackwalls, mounted on Foose chrome alloy rims, while a pleasing rake is enhanced by using 45 aspect ratio tires in front and 60 at the rear.

A very tasteful resto-mod, this 1956 Chevy Nomad will be ideal for show, tour or cruising. Its timeless design means it looks up-to-date while nearing six decades old.
