Boasting a fascinating story, this 220 SE coupe was destined for Mercedes-Benz’ dealer in Rome, Franco Boringa, finished in blue (MB335) over a black leather interior, the car was purchased by Dario Lenzini, of the renowned Italian Lenzini family, owners of the Lazio Football Club. First registered in Dario’s name on July 1962, the car wore the Italian number plates Roma 542235.

Remaining with the Lenzini family for 18 years, the car was then purchased by Corradino De Novellis on August 5, 1980. De Novellis worked for the Italian government and was transferred to work at the Italian Embassy in London and brought this 220 SE coupe with him, bringing it into the U.K. on September 17, 1981. During this time, the car wore U.K. diplomatic plates 188D 172 and was used regularly. Mr. De Novellis’ diplomatic status ceased on August 19, 1987 and it was then registered privately as MYY 481X. Mr. De Novellis had a light restoration carried out on the vehicle between 1999 and 2000 in Rome, costing the equivalent of £14,000.

Acquired by the third and current owner in 2016 from Mr. De Novellis, the consignor embarked on a comprehensive two-year restoration managed by Witches Lane Motorworks. Chrome was handled by ACF Howell, the Mercedes’ wood trim was restored by London Carriage Craft, and the interior leather was sourced in Germany.

The engine, gearbox, and differential were comprehensively overhauled using parts by Niemoller, Germany, W111 specialists. The car was also fitted with a new radiator, new brake lines, and a steering box by Niemoller. Significant time was also spent on addressing common corrosion issues on the underbody. Finally, the car was fitted with new BF Goodrich tyres sourced from the U.S. The restoration is chronicled by various invoices, and the car also retains its original owner’s manual and service book. Importantly, the car is accompanied by its original bill of sale and correspondence from Mr. De Novellis, including some photos of the car in his ownership.

Acquisito dal terzo e attuale proprietario nel 2016, dal signor De Novellis, il mittente ha intrapreso un restauro completo di due anni gestito dalla Witches Lane Motorworks. Il cromo è stato gestito dalla ACF Howell, le finiture in legno della Mercedes sono state restaurate dalla London Carriage Craft e la pelle degli interni è stata acquistata in Germania.

Il motore, il cambio e il differenziale sono stati completamente revisionati con parti da Niemoller, Germania, specialisti del W111. L'auto fu anche dotata di un nuovo radiatore, di nuovi tubi dei freni e di una scatola dello sterzo di Niemoller. È stato inoltre dedicato un tempo significativo per affrontare i comuni problemi di corrosione sul sottoscocca. Infine, l'auto è stata equipaggiata con nuovi pneumatici BF Goodrich provenienti dagli Stati Uniti. Il restauro è documentato da varie fatture inoltre, l'auto conserva anche il manuale d'uso e il libretto di manutenzione.
