- With the claim of inventing the first motorized “combination delivery vehicle” in 1896, Mercedes-Benz’s van heritage runs deep. The German automaker’s initial range of trucks introduced at the 1926 Berlin Motor Show would give rise to its first true van, the 1929 L1000 Express. But it was the 1955 L 319 and its minibus counterpart, the O 319, that would help popularize cab-over-engine commercial vans as we know them today. Larger than a standard delivery van, but smaller than a conventional commercial truck, they were Mercedes’ first medium-duty entries. Initial variants shared engines with Mercedes passenger cars, with diesel engines joining the lineup later.
- This fully restored O 319 minibus has been extensively and tastefully modified into a luxurious camper. A previous owner, who was an eccentric computer engineer, used his wide-ranging skills to painstakingly refurbish and upgrade this unique vehicle over a 15-year period.
- The exterior boasts factory colors executed to a very high standard. Underneath is a modern air-ride suspension system adapted to the standard factory dual rear-wheel setup. Workmanship is meticulous, with precise plumbing, and expert electricals designed to handle the demands of modern accessories. Details include a centralized circuit-breaker panel and lighting for every cubby and compartment upon opening. Propane and water tanks in the undercarriage are cleverly integrated along the frame rails.
- Inside, modern leather front seats and a comfortable berth at the rear provide welcoming accommodations whether driving or camping. In contrast to many modern campers with dark, cave-like interiors, the cabin feels open and airy thanks to sizeable windows all around. A custom-made cabinet houses the sink, stove, and thoughtful storage. Dual front and rear audio systems are also housed within custom cabinetry, while a cleverly stowed solar panel keeps accessories powered off grid. A modern, fuel-injected Mercedes-Benz four-cylinder gasoline engine and four-speed automatic transmission with Gear Vendor overdrive and oil cooler provide power.
- Under present ownership since 2020, this one-of-a-kind Mercedes camper van is accompanied by an assortment of re-mapped ECU chips, a set of manuals, period literature, and a photo album documenting the masterful restoration.
