Mercedes-Benz’s elegant Paul Bracq–designed W111 made its debut in 1959 and was produced, in its many variations, until 1971. Among the most desirable variations were the two-door models—the 280 SE cabriolet and coupé—which were relatively expensive, virtually hand-built automobiles in the great tradition of German craftsmanship. The generous application of wood trim throughout the interior was genuine solid hardwood, accented by the gentle use of brightwork; the leather upholstery was thick and comfortable, and both the ride quality and handling were superb. Perhaps unsurprisingly, these cars rapidly became favorites of international socialites and celebrities, and they were frequently seen cruising around the world’s most lavish destinations.

Built for the German market, this 1968 Mercedes-Benz 280 SE Cabriolet is one of 1,390 produced between 1968 and 1971. According to the owner, the car spent most of its life with a family in Remscheid and passed between various members before being traded to another individual. Today, this vehicle shows in good order with white paint over a blue leather interior with a matching Dark Blue convertible top. The original Silver Gray (DB180) paint was changed to the current colour at an unknown point. This 280 SE Cabriolet also features an incredibly rare four-speed, floor-mounted manual transmission and a long ratio rear end that simultaneously increases driver engagement and improves high speed cruising. Lastly, the luxuriously appointed wood veneered dashboard is fitted with a Becker Grand Prix radio and the car is further specified with headrests, an automatic antenna, hazard warning lights with headlight system, a two-tone horn, and single seats with an arm rest. More recently, the brakes received a service along with an overhaul of the injection pump prior to a long-distance trip to Barcelona and Nice.

Timelessly elegant, this Mercedes-Benz model endures as a status symbol over half a century beyond its introduction. A wonderful tour and show car thanks to its quality and usability, this example would be the perfect addition to any collection.
