An exclusive offering from Sotheby’s Berluti: The Art of Craftsmanship auction 24 April- 7 May 2019.

For over 120 years, Berluti has been lauded for their exquisite bespoke footwear and exemplary standard of quality. In keeping with the same uncompromising standard of quality, the Berluti house developed their signature treatment of exclusive Venezia leathers. Their expert colorists hand craft unique patinas for each item, a technique which lends a distinctive distressed appearance. Similarly, Porsche has been praised for creating legendary sports cars as evocative as they are aesthetically beautiful. The unmistakable shape of a 911 has endured for 55 years, with clean and understated body lines and minimalist interior, but no compromises in the performance department has led to the 911 becoming one of the most beloved sports cars of all time. In 2005, the French fashion house expanded their line to include a full line of leather goods, and by 2012 had explored lifestyle offerings with unexpected collaborations. One of which is the first and only car customized by Berluti: the already highly coveted 1973 Porsche 911 S Targa- the last production year of the long hood, narrow bumper F-series 911- with an interior crafted at the hands of a master upholsterer under the careful guidance of Berluti.

This one-off example is currently being offered at Sotheby’s Berluti: The Art of Craftsmanship online auction 24 April-7 May 2019.

Click ahead to explore the details of the one-and-only Berluti Porsche 911 S.

The body of the 911 shapes light as it reflects back to its viewer, creating a signature highlight line and gradient running the length of the body, from headlight to tail lights and defining edges of the fender flares. Inside, Berluti’s artful patina adds definition to the interior’s shapes and patterns, complementing the soft curves of the exterior.

Porsche’s desirable Targa body offers the open air driving experience of a convertible, with a removable roof panel and brushed stainless steel roof bar. This example underwent a complete Concours quality mechanical, bodywork and interior restoration by revered German Porsche Specialists, Early 911s (www.early911s.de)

The 911 S is outfitted with the robust 2.4-litre flat six engine, paired to the stronger Type 915 five-speed manual gearbox with conventional “H” shift pattern. This example retains its original, fully numbers matching engine and gearbox. The 2.4 S iteration of the 911 also benefits from features passed down from the venerable 2.7-litre RS, such as lightweight aluminum brake calipers, a front-mounted oil cooler, and the optional 85-litre fuel tank normally only found in the RS model.

Porsche’s normally minimalist interior was tastefully trimmed in Berluti’s supple Venezia leather, painstakingly finished with their signature patina to give the impression of well-worn in surfaces which have evolved over time. Beautiful stitched Bouclé wool floor mats with an English-style border take the place of the automaker’s original carpeting and add subtle contrast to the rich burnished brown leather throughout the interior. Even the driver’s heel pad is crafted in Venezia patinated leather.

Berluti’s expert leather craftsmanship is evident throughout and spares no detail. The steering wheel, steering column, wiper and turn signal stalk are all trimmed in fine leather. The horn button and key fob are embossed with Berluti’s “B” logo, and the shift knob is hand stitched and also sheathed in leather.

Where plastic would normally greet the 911’s occupants, the dashboard is now amazingly upgraded with fully leather trimmed panels with open seam and double top-stitching and embossed “Berluti Paris” detail on the glove box door.

No detail was overlooked during while trimming the Porsche’s interior. The ignition bezel, hazard button surround, headlight knob, as well as window cranks were all coated in Venezia leather surfaces.

Berluti’s accoutrements extend to the boot, where the even more supple burnished leather can be found accompanied by matching Bouclé wool covering the spare tire and battery compartments. Venezia leather can be found beneath the rear decklid in the engine compartment as well.

The 911’s Targa roof panel is trimmed in alpaca wool and features a perfectly appropriate leather headliner. 911 S models received a discreet spoiler below the front bumper to aid in high speed stability, as the S was the most powerful variant of the 911 E, S and T trim models of the same year.

In addition to the bountiful leather appointments throughout the interior, Berluti has added two special matching accessories- a large model of the Jour-Off weekend bag and a pair of S3723 Saturnin St Tropez driving shoes inspired by “il commendatore” Enzo Ferrari and the driving shoes worn by racing drivers in the 1950s.
