• A limited-production icon with enduring cachet

Introduced in 1970, the Mercedes-Benz 280SE 3.5 cabriolet was identical to the standard 280SE cabriolet, with the exception of the engine. Instead of the more modest, standard-issue six, customers were now able to enjoy the spirited performance from the all-new 3.5-liter V-8. Referred to as the “engine of tomorrow” by Mercedes, the company threw much of its technical prowess into making the new V-8 engine both smooth and powerful. Featuring Bosch electronic fuel injection and transistorized ignition, power output was a healthy 230 bhp. This helped propel the 280SE 3.5 from rest to 60 mph in less than 10 seconds.

Accessories like power steering, power brakes, stereo radio, air conditioning, electric windows, and automatic transmission were standard equipment. Leather upholstery and polished wood trim helped keep up to five occupants comfortable. Only 1,232 of these cars, in convertible form, were sold between 1969 and 1971. Apart from Mercedes' top-of-the-line 600 series, this car was the flagship model in the Mercedes-Benz lineup. Priced at $14,509 by 1971, it was also one of the most expensive. Owned when new by the business and entertainment elite of the era, the 280SE 3.5 remains an undisputed automotive icon of the late-20th century.

This highly desirable, two-owner example from 1970 is now offered from some 20 years of single ownership with clearly evidenced regular maintenance and proper storage. It has received just one repaint, approximately 20 years ago, and the handsome dark blue finish is enhanced by tan upholstery and a blue convertible top. Correctly presented with approximately 98,500 actual miles, this fine example rides on a new, correct set of radial tires and comes with a car cover, owner’s manual, and a correct spare tire.
