The Breda 40 heavy artillery tractor entered production in 1940. It was intended to replace the earlier Breda 32 tractor. The Italian army made extensive use of wheeled artillery tractors beginning in World War I. Fiat produced a model capable of pulling two heavy artillery pieces of up to 40-tons combined weight. Unlike most other countries, Italy showed little interest in full-track tractor designs. The Italian designs featured large-diameter tires and high ground clearance to address off-road towing, especially in mountainous regions. The Breda 40 featured a diesel engine to drive all four wheels via a five-speed gearbox (plus constant-reduction gear), lockable differentials and individual propeller shafts. It had leaf spring suspension, independent at front. The Breda 40 was produced with open-type bodywork and a closed cab, as displayed, as well as with cargo beds and open-topped cabs. There was also a recovery tractor version, designated Breda 41; that was equipped with a demountable crane jib and other recovery gear. The Breda 40 would typically tow the standard Italian anti-aircraft guns of 75 and 90-mm as well as the 149-mm field guns. The German Army used a number of Breda 40s as well.
