The OM Autocarreta 32 light truck was introduced in 1932. It was a curious mixture of old and new technology. It featured a hand-crank start and solid rubber tires as did most World War I era trucks, but featured modern innovations such as independent suspension all round and four-wheel steering. The suspension was by transverse leaf springs above and below the differentials. The transmission consisted of a four-speed gearbox mounted centrally, which drove forward and backward to the two axles. A wheelbase of only 81-inches combined with four-wheel steering made the Autocarreta very maneuverable with very good cross-country ability. It was designed to be used in mountainous regions. Its air-cooled diesel engine proved to be very reliable and held up well in hard service and extreme temperature variations. The slow top speed of the Autocarreta 32 made it impractical for hauling cargo for long distance deployment. It was superseded in 1937 by the slightly modified Autocarreta Tipo 37. In 1936 a pneumatic-tired version was introduced (Tipo 36M), as well as two personnel carriers, the Tipo 36P - seating ten plus driver, and the Tipo 36 DM seating seven plus driver, with a mounted machine gun.
