The 1976 Manta Mirage presented here is a true one of a kind example that has remained in single ownership its entire existence and is offered from the collection of noted automotive enthusiast, publisher and former SCORE President Mr. Sal Fish.
First in the employment of Petersen Publishing from 1967 to 1974, Fish went on to hold positions at Car Craft and Hot Rod Magazine where he was later to assume the role of Publisher. While as the publisher of Hot Rod Magazine, Fish, along with Manta creator Brad Lovette, Tom Medley, Bud Lang and Jim McCraw decided to do a three-issue build that would be featured in consecutive issues of Hot Rod Magazine. The idea of the build was that some “backyard car guys” would be able to build the car in 80 hours for $5,000.
The kick-off issue was November, 1974 where the car was prominently featured on the front cover with a multi-page article inside. The next two issues – December, 1974 and January, 1975 also had multi-page articles of the progress and completion of the car. Upon completion of the project, the car was titled to Sal Fish in 1975 and has remained in his possession ever since.
We understand the Manta has been used sparingly and only around 1,750 miles have been logged on the unique sports car. Notably, the car has also been featured in “Petersen’s – The Best of Hot Rod” – Jan. 1986, Kit Car Magazine May, 1991. The Manta is offered publically for the first time in its long-term ownership and we encourage close inspection.
