Model LD3M. 361-cid, 305-hp wedge OHV V-8 engine, three-speed Torqueflite automatic transmission, torsion bar independent front suspension, live rear axle with semi-elliptic leaf springs, and four-wheel power hydraulic drum brakes. Wheelbase: 122”

Seldom do model names get so confused as Dodge’s use of “Royal,” “D-500” and “Lancer.” This car labors under the burden of all three.

“Lancer,” was initially Dodge’s name for a pillarless “hardtop;” either coupe or sedan. “Royal,” was a V-8-only series, the top line until “Custom Royal” upstaged it in 1955. “D-500” signified a more powerful hemi V-8. By 1958, D-500 had become the option code for a 361-cid, 305-hp wedge engine with single four-barrel carburetor. This car, then, is a mid-range hardtop coupe with Dodge’s largest available engine in its next-to-most-powerful state of tune.

Handsome in green and white, it has power steering, power brakes, chrome wire wheels, a Continental kit, windshield washers, AM radio with dual rear antennas, heater, Faria tachometer, and a new pleated leather interior matching the body colors. The Continental kit has enabled the fitting of longer 1959 Dodge taillights, a subtle custom touch. Body contours and paint are excellent, as is the brightwork throughout. Doors have nice even gaps and shut well. The engine compartment is clean and detailed, while the undercarriage has a matte black finish. Like some other cars in the Ed Ewing collection, it is a light, mid-range model with an optional high-performance engine also in excellent overall condition.
