Model PC-3-H. 375 bhp, 413 cu. in. wedge OHV V-8 engine, three-speed Torqueflite automatic transmission, coil spring independent front suspension, live rear axle with semi-elliptic leaf springs, and four-wheel hydraulic drum brakes. Wheelbase: 126 in.
All of Chrysler’s 1960 cars were built with frameless, unibody construction, and the 300F got a complete makeover. Passengers were treated to an interior with four individual, leather-covered, contoured bucket seats with front chairs that swivel for easy access. A full-length center console included armrests, storage compartments, power window controls, an ashtray, and a large tachometer. The instrument panel featured “Astra-dome” three-dimensional styling, in which a 150 mph speedometer was protected by a “Panelescent”-lighted globe, all sitting above an array of futuristic buttons and switches.
Under the 300F’s hood lay a standard 413-cubic inch V-8 hooked to a three-speed Torqueflite automatic transmission. This version of the Golden Lion generated 375 horsepower and 495 foot-pounds of torque. Feeding the beast was Chrysler’s all-new Ram Induction system that positioned a pair of Carter four-barrel carbs 30 inches away from their targeted combustion chambers. The “runners” that separated carbs from cylinders used sonic wave frequencies to compress the air-fuel mixture for greater power in the engine’s mid-range, where most drivers want some extra oomph for passing or merging with traffic.
The most expensive letter cars to date, the F hardtop listed for $5,411, with the convertible going for $5,841. This example is one of 82 believed to exist and is finished in Terra Cotta, and it has been wonderfully restored with excellent contours all around and complementing excellent paint. The doors shut very well with even gaps and overall alignment. The 300F is one of the more rakish examples of the 300 Letter Car Series, with its bucket seats and full-length console. Of note is the Panelescent instrumentation cluster that looks almost ethereal when lit up at night. The interior features beige leather with a tan cloth top and black dash pad and all of the usual “standard options” that were found on the 300 series of cars. Under the hood is the nicely color coordinated and finished 375 brake horsepower wedge-head V-8 with its wild looking cross ram intake setup, all of which are excellently finished in keeping with the quality of the examples found in the Staluppi Collection.
