What do you get when you cross a Chevelle with a Corvette? A Corvelle, of course, and that’s exactly what this car is. A professionally-built 1968 Chevelle Malibu Convertible Coupe has been mated with the skeleton of a 2007 Corvette, and the result is mind-boggling. The real surprise is the harmony with which they fit together, not only in the engine compartment or underneath, but also in the cockpit, which is pure Corvette.
In the mating, the rear seat has been dispensed with, which makes the seating very spacious. The seats are upholstered in graphite leather, and the interior appointments are in the Corvette style. All modern creature comforts have been included, and the Corvette’s operating system is used, so even the remote features of the trunk, mirrors, and fuel door are preserved.
The moving parts, of course, are all Corvette, including the LS2 engine, six-speed manual transmission, front and rear independent suspension, and four-wheel disc brakes. It accelerates like a Corvette, handles like a Corvette, and brakes like a Corvette—all the while appearing like a mild-mannered Chevelle.
The full complement of features includes power rack-and-pinion steering, power disc brakes, power seats, power windows, a power top, a security system, and air bags. A tilt steering wheel adjusts to suit any driver, and the car is equipped with cruise control, intermittent wipers, dual-control air conditioning, and an AM/FM/CD stereo.
The Chevelle’s body was restored to the highest standards throughout. The Corvette engine has been customized with carbon fiber covers, an air cleaner system, a radiator scoop, and a radiator cover, all matching the body shade of blue. The engine compartment is completely trimmed in polished stainless steel, giving the appearance of chrome. The sight is breathtaking.
At first glance, the car is indistinguishable from a stock Chevelle Malibu. Its medium blue paint has a dark blue pinstripe, all of the highest quality. Included in the Chevelle trim are the chrome bumpers, the wheel cutout and side moldings, and the Malibu grille, all of which are in excellent condition. The more observant will notice the “Corvelle” emblems, and then do a double take, as the brain subconsciously reads “Corvette.” The 2007 Corvette wheels mount P245/40ZR18 Goodyear Eagle tires.
It is not just the craftsmanship, however, that is exemplary. A project of this sort takes a great deal of engineering, for not only must it look great, it must drive well and all the electrical and mechanical systems must work together. Modern electronic technology helps immeasurably, but a good deal of old fashioned ingenuity is the magic ingredient.
