The second-generation Thunderbird was considered to be more luxurious than it was sporty, so the sports roadster was introduced to bring back the Thunderbird’s sporty presence. The sports roadster is easily distinguishable from other Thunderbirds of this generation by its fiberglass tonneau cover, which covers the rear seats and makes for a slightly more aggressive appearance. Additionally, all sports roadsters were fitted with Kelsey-Hayes wire wheels and fitted with a special front fender emblem, a rear-wing skirt delete, and a passenger grab bar. In total, 1,427 Thunderbird Sports Roadsters were built for its inaugural year.
According to its factory invoice, this 1962 Sports Roadster, one of the first 465 produced, was delivered to C&C Motors Inc., of Hatboro, Pennsylvania. It was finished in Rangoon Red with a black leather interior, and it was further outfitted with power driver and passenger seats, a pushbutton radio, Rayon whitewall tires, windshield washers, an outside mirror, and a heavy-duty battery. Following a prior restoration, the car has been fitted with an aftermarket stereo/cassette player that has been cleverly integrated into the center console. Thunderbird Sports Roadsters have always had a keen following for their unique styling, and this example would be a wonderful addition to any Thunderbird collection.
