  • The performance Oldsmobile; Equally sporty and comfortable

135 bhp, 303 cu. in. OHV V-8 engine, Hydramatic transmission, coil-spring independent front suspension, live rear axle with semi-elliptic leaf springs, and four-wheel hydraulic drum brakes. Wheelbase: 119.5 in.

The Eighty-Eight, which was produced from 1949 to 1999, reflected the performance side of Oldsmobile for generations. In its earliest form, the “88” quickly began setting records in stock car competition and was selected as the Indianapolis 500 Pace Car in 1949. The following year, a Rocket 88 would break a class speed record at Daytona, where it averaged 100.28 mph. This celebrated V-8 power, coupled with Oldsmobile’s fresh styling, ensured a very successful division for General Motors.

This attractive Convertible, formerly of a large, private Southern California collection, has been maintained since receiving a quality cosmetic restoration, and it continues to impress. The Rocket engine compartment is very well appointed, with correct colors, hardware, and details throughout. The navy leather upholstery is perfectly complemented by a dark blue cloth top and matching boot. New weatherstripping keeps each compartment tight and sealed from the elements. The chassis and floor pans are also very clean and detailed, as is the well-presented trunk compartment, which is complete with a matching wide whitewall spare and jack equipment. Other features include a Hydramatic transmission, dual spotlights, dual mirrors, and fender skirts.

As this example boasts a powerful OHV V-8 that is combined with a relatively lightweight body, Oldsmobile enthusiasts could argue that it would be a contender for the title of the first American muscle car. This 88 is impressive in every area and can be exhibited at most any venue with confidence.
