Porsche’s 356 Speedster is considered by many to be one of the most iconic automobiles the company has ever created. It was built at the urging of U.S. importer Max Hoffman and was intended to be a bare-bones sports car aimed towards the youth market. With a minimalist design both inside and out, which was defined by its characteristic cut-down windshield, the Speedster was an instant hit with individuals looking to enjoy a no-nonsense automobile that could be driven to the limit both on and off the race track.
It was only natural that Porsche, a company that holds its heritage dear, revitalised the Speedster name and concept in a modern automobile. In 1989, thirty years after the last Speedster was produced, Porsche unveiled the new 911 Speedster. This true two-passenger car retained a number of visual cues that were first seen on the original, including speedster humps over the rear seats and the iconic cut-down windshield.
Porsche produced just 2,065 Speedsters. Of course, for such a limited-production vehicle with massive demand, prices often rose as high as $100,000 for a new Speedster. As such, it was deemed a collectible by Porsche enthusiasts the second it left the showroom floor, and almost every significant collection of Porsches has an excellent Speedster.
This car was produced in 1989 as a U.S.-specification Speedster, and it boasts a very compelling colour combination of Forest Green Metallic over a Cashmere Beige and Black leather interior and a Mahogany convertible top. Following its departure from its original American owner, the car was shipped over to its current owner in Greece, where it has resided ever since. Having travelled less than 7,500 miles from new, this is surely one of the finest examples extant, and its unique colour combination only adds to this Speedster’s appeal.
The 911 Speedster boasts just as much character as the car it harkens back to, and it is one of the most collectible post-1973 Porsches ever produced. As the Speedster is both simultaneously elegant and sporty, it is a car that could be used for special occasions as well as a daily driver in warm-weather climates. This Speedster, which is finished in an incredibly unique colour combination and boasts just two owners and limited miles from new, would be an ideal acquisition for any collector of classic or modern Porsches.
