Harley-Davidson’s FLH Electra-Glide is part of a long succession of “Glide” models. The FL dates from 1941, when it began as a version of the earlier EL, with which it shared a frame but used a 74-cubic inch version of the EL’s “knucklehead” engine. The FL directly replaced the flathead UH and ULH models.

A new “panhead” engine was introduced in 1948. The next year, the FL received a hydraulically-damped fork, and with it the name “Hydra-Glide.” For 1961 it got a new frame with swing-arm rear suspension and the name “Duo-Glide.” Finally, in 1965, with the addition of an electric starter, the Duo-Glide became “Electra-Glide,” and the following year the panhead engine was phased out in favor of a more powerful “Shovelhead.”

This 1972 Electra-Glide is in very good condition. It shows slightly more than 22,800 miles and exhibits no frame or fender flaws. The black and white paint is very good, as are all the plated items. The black leather seat is similarly in excellent condition, and the frame is painted black with no major flaws visible. The bike runs on 5.00x16 Coker whitewalls. The Electra-Glide is the legendary “Big Harley,” of which this is an excellent example for extended cruising.
