  • The first year of the iconic Corvette Sting Ray
  • Brilliantly restored in Riverside Red over Red

340 bhp, 327 cu. in. OHV V-8 engine with a Carter four-barrel carburetor, four-speed manual transmission, four-wheel independent suspension, and four-wheel hydraulic drum brakes. Wheelbase: 98 in.

The year 1963 was big for “America’s Sports Car,” as it marked the first new Corvette model since the car’s introduction a decade earlier. This new Corvette would be dubbed the “Sting Ray,” in part thanks to its radical new looks penned by Bill Mitchell and Larry Shinoda. Aside from completely new styling, the second-generation Corvette brought about independent rear suspension, as well as optional power steering, power brakes, and air conditioning.

The biggest news though was the introduction of a second body style. Buyers could now opt for a gorgeous coupe instead of the traditional convertible. Arguably the most attractive American car ever built upon its unveiling, the coupe was characterized by a stylistic rear-split window, giving the Corvette a touch of elegance. Unfortunately, the split-window rear end would only last for the 1963 model year, making those coupes some of the most sought after of second-generation Corvette models.

This particular split-window boasts the 327/340 specification engine with the desirable options of knock-off wheels and an AM radio. Originally finished in Silver Blue, it was restored three-and-a-half years ago in the very eye-catching color combination of Riverside Red over Red by a Philadelphia-based Corvette collector. It has been driven only a handful of miles since. Currently showing 66,378 miles on its odometer, the car is reported to run and drive well and would certainly be a hit at local shows or a wonderful cruiser.

Unquestionably one of America’s most beautiful sports cars, the Split-Window Corvette is a 1960s icon and a staple in any collection of American automobiles. The small-block examples are prized by enthusiasts for their driving dynamics, combining wonderful handling along with plenty of power. These are excellent long-distance highway cruisers. The example presented here is surely no exception to the rule.
