30 bhp, 192.4 cu. in. L-head inline four-cylinder engine, three-speed selective sliding-gear transmission, solid front and full-floating rear axles with full-elliptical leaf-spring front and rear suspension, and rear-wheel external-contracting brakes. Wheelbase: 108.3 in.

The 1915 Studebaker models were actually built in the former E-M-F factory in Detroit, with the bodies being built in South Bend and shipped to Detroit for final assembly; this is a reflection of Studebaker’s roots as a carriage builder, as employees could build open bodies but were not skilled at machining engines or designing chassis. An interesting feature was the gas cap being mounted in the dashboard, as cars from that era were usually filled from cans.

Brass Era Studebakers are very rare, making the survival of this 1915 Model SD-4 a genuine treat. It was formerly owned by Joe Buchtel, of Clinton, New Jersey, who is believed to have acquired it in 1965. It was owned by Mr. Buchtel for 30 years before being passed in 1995 to Mark Conforth, a local restorer in Branchville, New Jersey, the lifelong hometown of Mr. Roy. Mr. Roy acquired the car not long after for his collection, and it has remained a part of the stable since.

While inspecting the Studebaker, it is obvious that the car was restored to a high standard quite a few years ago. The body is finished in what appears to be two shades of maroon, with black fenders, and the paint is solid and holds a good shine. The leather interior is well preserved, aside from the arm bolsters, which show wear and would likely respond well to treatment, as would the brass trim and wooden wheels. Under the hood, the car is clean and well presented, with only signs of age and minor surface rust. The top appears either as the original or a very old replacement, but it is usable. The car is also offered with an original manual.

This very rarely seen old Studebaker deserves a good home in a new owner’s collection.
