In the 1950s, Oldsmobile refined its winning strategy by providing more of everything—more power, more luxury and more style for the American automobile buyer. In turn, Oldsmobile moved up to fifth place in industry sales rankings for 1955, and in large part, Oldsmobile’s remarkable success was due to its increasingly powerful engines, long list of standard amenities and its modern and very stylish Holiday two- and four-door hardtop models.

For 1955, the entire Oldsmobile line continued with the X-member frame that was first introduced in 1954, with the larger 98 series riding a 126-inch wheelbase, four inches longer than that of the 88 line. The Super 88 and 98 shared the top Oldsmobile “Rocket” V-8 engine. While the entire Oldsmobile line offered many standard features not available on other makes, the 98 series raised the bar with a padded dash, an electric clock, power steering, windshield washers and a Deluxe steering wheel, plus courtesy and back-up lights.

This 98 Holiday Hardtop Sedan from 1955 is a very nice representative of this highly successful Oldsmobile model. It has covered 98,345 original miles at the time of writing and benefits from the care of a knowledgeable owner/collector of American automobiles, with particular interest in the Oldsmobile models of the 1950s. It has received a cosmetic restoration, including an exterior refinish, restored brightwork and some interior work. An attractive alternative to the ubiquitous Chevrolets and Fords of the era, this 1955 98 Holiday Hardtop offers an affordable entry into the classic car hobby with plenty of room for the entire family.
