Period advertising for Chrysler’s streamlined models touted increased fuel efficiency in a time when a gallon of gas cost less than 20 cents. Although fuel prices were not the concern they are today, America was still in the Depression, and it was in any manufacturer’s best interest to convey as much value to the buyer as possible. Out of 5,000 higher-horsepower S2s built in 1936, only five percent were Coupes. This example was purchased by the current owner approximately five years ago and sported a presentable 1960s-era restoration. The owner therefore elected to conduct an extensive cosmetic and mechanical overhaul.

The paint was stripped to bare metal and re-sprayed, and several pieces of chrome were re-plated. Mechanical work included having the suspension rebuilt and tightened as well as a clutch rebuild. The top and bottom ends of the motor were serviced just short of a full rebuild. Today the DeSoto displays beautifully, and the mechanical performance is described by the owner to be “tight as a drum.” In 2009 it was displayed at the Greenwich Concours d’Elegance and was awarded “Most Innovative Car, Presented by Tesla Motors.” The plaque will be transferred to the new owner of this Airflow, as will an original instruction manual and factory sales brochure.

Of the 250 DeSoto S2 Airflow Coupes built, it is believed that only eight still exist. This one is optioned with fender skirts, clock, front and rear bumpers and the very rare factory tachometer. It has retained its integrity since new and as such has only required cosmetic work performed by long-term owners. With its most recent freshening, this DeSoto is ready to be proudly displayed and admired for its Art Deco styling cues or can be enjoyed on the open road for miles of worry-free touring.
