Norman deVaux was a good friend of William C. Durant. He helped Durant set up a California branch of Chevrolet and later Star and Durant operations. In 1930, he teamed with Colonel Elbert Hall of the Hall-Scott Motor Company to form the DeVaux-Hall Motors Corporation. They leased a plant from the Hayes Body Corporation in Grand Rapids, Michigan, and by April 1931 the DeVaux 6-75 was ready for market. A well-equipped car, selling at $545 to $795, it had an L-head six, designed by Col. Hall, whose previous credits included aircraft and commercial powerplants. Unusually for a modestly priced car, the engine had six separate ports for intake and exhaust.
There were two body styles, coupe and sedan, but each was offered in four stages of trim and equipment: Standard, Sport, Deluxe and Custom. Standard cars had wood artillery wheels and Bedford cord upholstery. Sport models added wire wheels and mohair and a rumble seat for the coupe.
The Nethercutt Collection acquired this rare DeVaux 6-75 Sport Coupe in February 2004 from Bradley Flint of Greene, New York. Previous owners included Donald Dunbar of Binghamton, New York. It was apparently repainted in 1999, with hand-painted white pinstripes over the green body color. The roof is covered in black leather, which appears original, and has been repaired in places. The interior has original cloth on the doors, seats and headliner, all of which show the wear and patina of age. The body, however, is solid.
The car has its original Hall engine, reportedly rebuilt in 1991. The engine compartment is fairly clean but has not been detailed. Overall this is a serviceable car that could use a cosmetic refurbishment or could benefit even further from a complete restoration.
The DeVaux Registry shows details of just 52 Model 6-75 cars, only seven of them Sport Coupes. A rare model of a rare car, this DeVaux Sport Coupe is perfect for the collector of unusual automobiles with intriguing histories.
