The Messerschmitt’s aeronautical roots are reflected in its fuselage-like body and cockpit-enveloping “bubble” canopy. Formed from clear acrylic, it contains the roof, windshield, side and rear windows, as well as the frames for the sliding side panes. It is hinged on the right side of the vehicle and opens upward for entry and exit. Once reaching the midpoint of its travel, the center of gravity shifts to the right, keeping it open, restrained by a leather strap on the left side of the cowl. For the improved KR 200 model in 1955, the windshield section was extended by moving the “A pillars,” which formed the forward edge of the side window opening, to the rear. The result was a canopy that was easier and less expensive to manufacture, thus providing greater visibility for the driver. An electric windshield wiper replaced the manual wiper of the early KR 175 at this time.

This 1960 Messerschmitt Kabinenroller is fully and professionally restored, and it is excellent in nearly all respects. It is painted attractively in light yellow and has a very dramatic interior. This very exotic Deluxe accessory trim of reticulated python upholstery is, in fact, real, authentic snakeskin, as the original printed vinyl was unavailable in the correct, bold pattern. In the fashion of later KR 200s, the dashboard is very plain, instrumented only with a clock and metric speedometer. Also of note is the very rare and highly sought-after “Tiger” seat, which is considerably more comfortable and was available by special order on later cars.

The car is very well detailed throughout, with paint, brightwork, and interior being in very good to excellent condition. The drivetrain is exceptionally well detailed and clean in all respects. The wheels have full chrome covers and are mounted with double-sided whitewalls, so even the single rear wheel shows white from either side. There is a chrome luggage rack on the tail. A most desirable example of the Messerschmitt KR 200, this Kabinenroller will be welcome in any collection.
