Produced between 1961 and 1964, the Triumph TR4 combined a new, modern and strikingly aggressive body design by famed Italian stylist Giovanni Michelotti with the basic chassis of the prior TR3A. The TR4 also improved passenger comfort with wind-up windows, face-level ventilation and an optional hardtop. The 2,138 cc engine of the late-production TR3A continued, while the 1,991 cc engine was also made available to buyers who participated in two-liter racing classes.
While the TR4 represented a natural progression to meet growing buyer expectations, Triumph’s distributors in America, the company’s largest market by far, demanded production of the old-style TR3B to test buyer acceptance of the new TR4. Ultimately, TR4 sales were strong, with 40,253 produced from 1961-1964.
The TR4A debuted for 1965, and those equipped with the all-new independent rear suspension system (IRS) represent the ultimate development of the TR4. IRS provided exceptional rear-wheel camber control with excellent wheel travel, while softer springs improved ride quality. Some 28,465 TR4As were produced between 1965 and August 1967, and of those, 75 percent were IRS-equipped, including the car offered here. At the grueling Sebring 12 Hours in 1966, ample proof of the effectiveness of the IRS concept was provided when three IRS-equipped TR4As achieved a remarkable 1-2-3 class victory.
This highly attractive, IRS-equipped TR4A Roadster from 1965 is offered from the esteemed estate of John O’Quinn. Its handsome red exterior is complemented by black upholstery piped white with a black top, plus a matching tonneau cover and carpeting. Triumph’s wood grain dash, a sporting three-spoke steering wheel, radio, rear luggage rack, wind wings and chrome wire-spoke wheels round out the package.
