- Comprehensive restoration

Jaguar’s E-Type debuted to universal applause at the March 1961 Geneva Motor Show. But despite its enormous popularity, the car had a number of shortcomings. The transmission, while sturdy, had an unsynchronised first gear, and the seat backs were non-adjustable, fine for short trips but tiring on a long journey. The cooling system, too, was marginal in some of the warmer American climes.

For 1965, these drawbacks were addressed, the gearbox given full synchros and the seat backs made adjustable. Brushed aluminium trim in the cockpit gave way to moulded plastic and leather, and a new brake booster was adopted. The engine was enlarged to 4.2 litres, resulting in greater torque, which made for better tractability in traffic situations.

The car retained its pure form – no external changes had been made – but was now more comfortable and responsive on the road. Road & Track enthused that it was “possible to drive at 15 mph in 4th gear without jerking or back-lashing,” all the while achieving up to 21 mpg. But for many its greatest asset was that it looked the part and that nothing else looked like it. The E-Type made a statement about its owner and all who rode in it.

A longer-wheelbase 2+2 coupé was added to the line for 1966. Not long afterwards, the onslaught of safety and emission regulations began having their way with the E-Type, altering both its appearance and its performance. For this reason, it is the Series 1 cars, built from 1961 to 1967, that are most highly prized.

First registered on 4th May 1967, this attractive E-Type is finished in the classic Jaguar colour combination of red coachwork with black interior. Between 1989 and 1992 it was the subject of a comprehensive rebuild by Auto Restorations of Rayleigh, Essex. The body was restored with metalwork where necessary and repainted at that time. Various invoices and photographs are contained in the history file detailing the work. PLB 759E is UK registered and supplied with a current MoT road test certificate. From its manual gearbox to the chrome wire wheels, this well presented 2+2 example is perhaps the perfect choice for the Jaguar enthusiast in search of a spirited drive, with space for the kids in back!
