The American fascination with Porsches took off when importer Max Hoffman brought 15 special roadsters to the United States in 1954. In 1959, the Reutter-bodied Roadster was replaced by the sophisticated Convertible D, which boasted a taller windshield, windup windows, and a top that fit better and didn’t give the impression of peering out of a mailbox. The accompanying Cabriolet offered even more creature comforts. The 356B arrived in 1960, with 15-inch wheels, heavier and taller bumpers, and a revised slope to the hood. Headlights were moved to the top of the fenders, with amber parking lights below them, and brake vents below the bumper.

The car on offer is a T6 1600 Super Cabriolet in Slate Gray, with a black cloth top and Lipstick Red interior. It’s an impressive restoration of a very solid matching-numbers car and is offered with a Porsche Certificate of Authenticity. Paint and bodywork are exceptional; the fit is outstanding, and the panels are straight and rust-free. The chrome is excellent, and the lights and all badges are immaculate. The interior was refinished to the highest standards in red leather and correct square-weave carpet, and all the gauge faces were refinished to new appearance. The original radio is in place, the steering wheel has been restored, and the top is fitted nicely.

The engine compartment is described as perfect, with all correct equipment and decals. The accompanying Porsche Certificate of Authenticity confirms the original matching-number 1600 Super engine and transmission, which have been rebuilt. The present owner recently engaged Porsche expert John Willhoit to ensure that this former concours winner continues to perform as well as it looks, making this one of the most desirable 356 Cabriolets in the world.
